About This Site

Posted by Harold Mansfield On August - 16 - 2008

This site is a tribute to  Electrifying Mojo who presided over The Midnight Funk Association at 12 a.m.nightly, and could be heard over the airwaves of metropolitan Detroit, and S.E. Michigan, Toledo and Northern Ohio, and Ontario Canada from 1977 to the mid 1980′s at various Detroit radio stations including, WGPR, WJLB, WCHB, WHYT, WMXD, WTWR (Toledo) and WDTR.

Mojo’s style of no formal play list turned a generation of fans on to music and artists that would other wise never been heard or appreciated in the area, if at all. Although employed at mostly urban stations, Mojo didn’t adhere to the notion that music was divided by race and believed that good music is appreciated by everyone.

Without him, many of us growing up in the era would never have heard of artists and musicians like, Peter Frampton, Pink Floyd, J.Giles Band, The B-52′s, Kraftwerk, New Order, and so many others, not to mention a true appreciation for funk artists like Parliament / Funkadelic, Rick James, Prince, Zapp and Roger, and far too many others to name them all.

In early 2008, we found that the domain midnightfunkassociation.com was unregistered, and at first, secured it for fear that it would be used for unrelated purposes and be lost forever.  The decision was made later that it should be used as a tribute to the D.J that influenced D.J’s, and the only on air personality that could “Make” an artist, or influence record sales and concert sell outs on a continuous basis, while holding nightly court over an entire area of the country and a generation of loyal fans. Something no other Dj has been able to do since.

  2. Harold Mansfield Said,

The only thing that I have been able to find is a few show openings that are posted on You Tube and Google Video, other than that I have been unsuccessful at finding any.

  3. Diane Said,

It would be fantastic if this site could get an actual audio or video interview with Mojo himself. Also, be wonderful to have him contribute photos and his own take on Detroit’s music scene past and present and where it is headed in the future. I listened to his programme every single time it was on never flipping a station. I love his deep resonant voice. I was rivetted to the radio waiting in high anticipation of the next song he’d play. He turned the music and everything in his world to sheer eloquent poetry. You literally felt as if you were on the Mothership being swept away to other realms, galaxies and stars. And I loved his line, “When you are down and feeling low, don’t say damn, say whammy whoa.”

  4. I like My Funk Uncut Said,

Funk is its own reward! Cass Tech Class of 1981. I landed the Mothership between 1977 and 1985 religiously at Olympia Stadium and nightly with Mojo. I became a Funkateer at the age of 5 at Olympia Stadium when my father took me to see Funkadelic and Parliment featuring his cousin Eddie Hazel. I was mesmerized and have had the opportunity as an adult to work with Bootsy and George Clinton.

So glad you have this site!

May the Funk B with U!
